Sweet Surprises!

I had an adventurous day as I drove to Minneapolis to drop a friend off at the airport and then return home.  I was very thankful to have another friend with me to keep me company on my way back...especially since it gets dark at 5:00.  I was t.i.r.e.d!  Lol :)

Arriving home a little travel-weary, I came home to a beautiful, sweet, lovely surprise...

...along with a much-treasured letter (I'm not sharing that one!) and a bag of delicious banana chips...of which I have already begun the consumption of while typing this post :)

Thank you, sweetheart!  It was such a blessing to come home to this sweet expression of your love for me!  You are a treasure, and I love you so very much!

4 days to go :)

Love,
Heather

Making Memories!

My sweet friend (and soon-to-be maid of honor), Elissa Berg, treated me to a "girl's night out" with her on Saturday evening after attending a friend's baby shower together that afternoon!  We had so much fun together, and the bread and cheese trays we had at the downtown pizza place were amazing!  Then we walked downtown with some delicious hot apple cider :)  ...and just chatted for a while!  It was so fun to spend one more time together as sweet friends before my name becomes "Mrs. Lindsey" this Saturday :)

Thank you, Elissa, for this wonderful treat!  You have been such a wonderful friend to me through all the ups and downs :)  Love ya so much and looking forward to great memories ahead!  And more game nights with Josh and I :)  Haha!

Pre-marital counseling...It's fun!

Since I have a godly fiancée and both of us desired to learn more about each other and how we can follow Christ together while following practical principles, I was excited to begin pre-marital counseling, which Heather and I had in 5 separate sessions at the Smith's house with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. It was a wonderful, special time, and it went by so fast! The book we used is one that my Sister Heidi and her now husband also used, called "Before you say your vows", and I recommend it to any couple! The book is $3.50 and can be purchased here.

The counseling time was a lot of fun and I loved being presented with many questions I would not have thought about otherwise.

Here are some of the questions we answered in some of the chapters:

Chapter 1: Personal Background

·         Based on your own experience, what are some ideals you have for your own family relationships? How do you intend to achieve those ideals?

·         In your relationships at home, what complaints have your family members had in relating to you?

·         Describe your present relationship with God.

Chapter 2: Roles in Marriage

·         The husband is responsible to lead. What does that mean when:

o   A decision is made about what kind of furniture to buy?

o   The husband and wife disagree?

o   A child needs discipline?

·         The wife is responsible to support her husband. How should she respond when:

o   Her husband hears her input, but then decides to do differently than she thinks?

o   Her husband asks her to do something that causes great stress for her?

Chapter 3: Communication in Marriage

·         On a scale of 1-10, to what extent have the following unhealthy communication habits been part of your communication with your parents?

o   Argument
o   Raising voice
o   Accusation
o   Name Calling
o   Belittling
o   Sarcasm
o   Defensiveness
o   Insinuation
o   Silence
o   Inattention

·         How do you think a man and a woman will respond differently in the following situations?

o   Seeing a new baby?

o   Watching a huge machine work?

o   Purchasing a car?

o   Attending a wedding?

Chapter 4: Values and Beliefs

·         Tell how you feel about each of the following:

o   Being late for an appointment

o   Rising Early

o   Staying up late

o   Eating out

Chapter 5: Principles for Finances

·         What are your beliefs about the amount of income to be given to the Lord’s work?

·         Do you have any possessions or financial resources that, even following marriage, you will view as your own to use or manage rather than belonging to both of you?

·         If a wife earns money, how do you think this money should be managed?

Heather dear, I enjoyed so much going through the book with you! I think it was a useful time to us as we continued to learn about each other and see how God had given us the same point of view in so many areas.

Love,
Josh

Countdown: One Week!

One week to go! God has really blessed Heather and me these past months. He has shown us clearly that we are made for each other. But it still is amazing to me to think that in a week I can say that I am married! Coming into 2015 I had my mind focused on one thing: getting my degree. Right around the time that took place my focus switched to working at Fargo Baptist Church when I was offered a position at the college and suddenly the radio station as well, and once that had settled a bit, God said "It's time!" and brought Heather and I together.

Needless to say there have been many preparation, many fun times over at the Smith's house, and many texts and letters that have been given that those who read these posts have never seen. There's a lot more behind the surface! And it has all been wonderful!

Some thanks are in order:
Thanks to the Smiths for inviting me over frequently, for letting me spend some good time with my sweetheart in the family home. I really enjoy all the talking we get to do, and I praise the Lord for fun end edifying conversations.

Thanks to my family, who from WI are always interested to know what is up, to my parents for their godly words of advice and scripture passages, and to my older sister Heidi for advice too, and for being instrumental my whole life in showing me how to be a good brother (which I know God will help me translate much of that into being a good husband), and thanks for my younger sister, Amber, for getting, it seems, nearly as excited about the wedding as the bride and groom!

Thanks to Heather for the sweet gifts and frequent notes that are a huge blessing to me, for talking to me on the phone and always being a listening ear, and for the wonderful times of prayer and Bible reading we have had together. I'm sure my list of blessings will only continue to grow! (And that is only a few of them there!)

And thanks to everyone who has come up to us and encouraged and congratulated us! I can safely say without a doubt that we are both excited, anticipating and praising God to join together in one week at the altar as husband and wife.

Love,
Josh

God's Way Is the Best Way

On my way home this morning, I had the radio running in my van, when one of my favorite songs began to play.  And it is from this song that our blog got it's name :)  I trust it is a blessing to you!

Heather

I'm dreaming of a white.......wedding!

Lol :)  That's what Josh texted me this morning when he woke up!  Last night the two of us about blew out the door of church at 9:00 when I headed home to see it was snowing.  Now, I absolutely love snow...but not snow plus 40+ mile an hour winds on a Wednesday night.  The reason being...I have given the City of Moorhead two generous donations on Thursday mornings over the past six weeks. We'll blame it on bride brain...  But last night I was determined not to give them another donation, so I parked a block and a half down the street so I wouldn't get a parking ticket after 8:00 this morning (which is when we have to be off the street on Thursdays)...and I trudged home through the gusting winds and stinging ice crystals pelting my face.  But, I survived.

After sending some wedding-related emails, I curled up in bed, listening to the wind howling outside.

...and unfortunately woke up this morning to it howling even louder.  *sigh*

But, I decided to brave the blustery conditions and pull out my winter driving skills - cough, cough...or lack thereof - all in the name of love :)  So I trudged back down the street to go find my van, that thanks to autostart was already warming up.

Being a perks member at Caribou coffee has its "perks" occasionally, and today was one of those such days :)  Seeing the weather was perfect for a warm drink, I got hot chocolate for my sweetheart and a coffee for myself............after doing a near 360 degree spin around the icy corner............yup, winter driving skills at its finest.  But then, the guy behind me watched me do it, and after getting myself back in my lane, I looked in my rear view mirror to see him do the same thing.  That's ok...Caribou Coffee erases all such memories :)

So just for some laughs, here are a few ways you know when it's winter in North Dakota:

  • When you don't dry your hair before you leave the house and severely regret it when you stop to pump your gas, only to find your gas tank is frozen shut.  After chiseling the ice away and pumping your gas, you spent double the amount of time outside than you had planned, and you climb back into your now-cold van to find out your hair is frozen solid...and it takes 20 minutes for it to defrost.
  • When you park in the store parking lot, and leave your vehicle running along with the other two empty vehicles on either side of you that are also running.
  • When you merge onto the highway to be promptly showered in salt and sand, so you try to wash your windshield only to find that your windshield wiper fluid is frozen solid. And since you now tried to get it to work, your wipers have now smudged a solid brown sheet of sludge across your windshield and you can't see at all, prompting you to stop at every gas station you pass just to wash your windshield.
  • When you decide that even with your smudged windshield you decide you'll stop at the gas station after you have delivered your sweetheart's hot chocolate to him, cleverly scheming that you will park in the church parking lot with the front of your van facing the sun hoping it will defrost the fluid because you really don't want to stop at the gas station just to wash your windshield.  After all...it's just too cold.
  • When you jump with excitement that the sun really did defrost your windshield wiper fluid while you hung out in your love's office for 10 minutes trying to delay your leaving time so you didn't have to mess with it on your way home.  Yep, the simple joys of life in North Dakota :)

And then when I got home I couldn't help but enjoy the beauty of  of the sunshine along with the snow.  One of my favorite sights of winter!

And I can now sit inside and defrost...

Only 9 days to go until I marry my best friend!
I love you, Josh!

Heather

Breaking News!

Thank you, Amber, for the laugh!  I absolutely love this, and it makes me laugh every time I look at it!

And for those of you that missed it...we made CNN Headline News!

Haha :)  Not in reality, but thanks to my sweet soon-to-be sister-in-love, this gave me some good giggles :)

Musings...

Finishing my final wedding project this morning - bow ties for my little brothers' - my mind began to wander over the past few months and how the Lord has brought Josh and I to where we are today with only two weeks to go before we are husband and wife.  God has been so good to me, and I don't deserve all of His blessings!  But as I was thinking about the events of the past few months, how we got to know each other, how the Lord has brought us closer in our relationship, how God has provided every single need for us...I was just so overwhelmed at what God has done!  Truly, as Ecclesiastes 3:11a says, "He hath made every thing beautiful in his time..." - so He has!  God has done exceeding abundantly above all we could ask or think.  And I stand amazed!

Not only has the Lord drawn us together over the past few months, but He has given us so many opportunities to serve.  And not just to serve, but to share with others in the process what God has done for us!  And I pray it is a blessing to them :)  God's way is the best way, and when you follow the Lord and obey His Word, He pours out the blessings into your life.  And it will be so much more than you could ever imagine!

I'm so thankful for my family and Josh's family and the encouragement they have been to Josh and I as we have grown together in our relationship on our journey to the marriage altar.  God has blessed me with wonderful, Godly parents and has blessed Josh with the same as well!  I am thankful for the relationships with them that we have been able to build as well, and I look forward to growing even closer in the days to come!

One thing I wanted to share with you all is a song that my brother Tom shared with me years ago and I grew to love.  Entitled Everything I Prayed For, it truly shares how I feel in regards to how the Lord has blessed me with Josh!  He is everything I prayed for and so much more!  I trust you are blessed as you listen :)

DIY Home Decor :)

I am a DIY person to the core...like big time!  Lol :)  I love projects.  They save money, they keep you busy, they are uniquely you, and they are FUN!  And I love coming up with DIY projects with which to decorate my soon-to-be new home.  Yes, friends - I even have a Pinterest board dedicated to just that, of which I hope to use some of them in the near future.  So, even in the midst of all the business of wedding prep, I have squeezed in a few home decor projects.  My first one was not with the intent of home decorating, but it was started with the plan of putting it on our guestbook table at our wedding.  Well, that idea was quickly squelched when I got it back from custom framing at Hobby Lobby and saw how big it turned out with the mat and the frame.  No problem!  It was going to double as home decor when I was done with it, but was a little worried it would be too small.  There are no such worries now :)

My second decor project was a winter/holiday wreath for our apartment.  This was a "spur of the moment" project that I set my mind on yesterday, and promptly went out and purchased the supplies and assembled it yesterday.  First wreath I've ever made, and it was FUN!  I did have to laugh when the girl ringing me up at Joann's was like, "Can I ask why all you have is the letter 'L'?"  I excitedly replied, "Because in two weeks that will be the first initial of my last name!"  I love telling people that :)  It's soooo exciting!

All other necessary projects were completed this morning :)  More on that soon!

Heather

Project Complete!

My sweetheart came over last night to help me finish some decorations for our reception, and we had a blast together!  It was so fun to just sit and chat and work on things for our wedding, and then when the night was over to be able to say that all the decorations for our wedding are DONE!!!  I'm so thankful :)  It's a blessing to see things getting accomplished, especially knowing that in 2 1/2 weeks I will be married to the love of my life!!!

Just wanted to leave you with a picture before I go back to packing my room.........

I love you, Josh!!!!

Where we met

Praise the Lord for the wonderful house of God that is Fargo Baptist Church! Without it, Heather and I would likely have never met. But God didn't want it that way! He had this planned all along.

I love you, Heather!

Love, Josh

A Humble Abode

I recall a couple months back a question form Mrs. Smith. Certainly it was asked in jest- "Joshua, are you going to live with Heather in the dorms?" Ever since graduating  from Master's Baptist College in the spring of this year, I lived in my own dorm room at a very low cost, thanks to Pastor Scheving. However, it was with absolute certainty I could answer Mrs. Smith's question with a resounding "no!" Heather and I, along with the Smiths, scoped out a few apartments until Heather and I could settle on one.

The first day that I was able to move into the apartment, legally, was Monday October 5th. I found this out the Saturday before and packed up nearly all my stuff in two days. Mr. Smith and the Smith kids helped me move my boxes over to the new apartment. I left behind only some essentials and cleaning supplies to clean up my room when I left. It just so happened that Tuesday the 6th was the day I became the Station Manager at Heaven 88.7 and the additional time constraints came with that. So for four more days that week I slept in the empty apartment with no dishes or silverware, and little else. When I ran out of clothes I knew I had to finally make the switch, and toted the rest of my stuff out. And that's the story of how I have now resided in the apartment for over one month now.

This past Sunday the Smiths came over to visit and take a look at Heather's wedding shower gifts, which are now in residence at the new location after being put there on Saturday. (As a side note, Elissa Berg was in the apartment along with others helping Heather to move that stuff in when I wasn't there, and spied on my fridge and freezer, but could find no fault. LOL)

I'm looking forward along with Heather to having others over at the new apartment. It is a nice second floor, two bedroom corner unit, nearby the church. And it feels almost like home... it's just missing one thing right now! (Want to take a guess?) :-)

You want pictures you say? Now why would I want to ruin a good surprise by posting pictures? :-)

Love, Josh

Opportunities to Share

Heather and I both love to tell others how God has blessed us, and for those who are single, we want to share how when they follow godly principles, God can bless them and they can go to the marriage altar while following godly principles and within scriptural boundaries.

That desire to share was the reason that we both spoke for a combined time of around one hour at Master's Baptist College's "Courtship and Marriage" class on October 31st. Heather and I shared how we met each other, and principles and practices that others can follow so that they can have the same blessed experience that we have. It was a great time, and both Heather and I learned some stuff from each others presentation that we did not know before!

There shall be showers of blessing!

...and that was the song that was running through my mom's mind and mine on Saturday morning as we attended the bridal shower that my maid of honor ~ Elissa Berg ~ and a sweet friend ~ Michele Scheving ~ put on for me, and thanks to Stephanie for doing the game.  And maybe the "showers of blessing" was a pun on words...but it was still so true!  So many lovely ladies from our church attended as well as several of my friends from a church that is over an hour away.  I was so touched by the love these ladies showed me, and they blessed me with many useful gifts as Josh and I begin our new lives together in our own home in just 2 1/2 short weeks!

Thank you to Theresa Johnson for the pictures :)
